What Is a Fiber Optic Cable Adapter?

Fiber optic adapters connect two optical cables. The user inserts the cables into both ends of the fiber adapter to enable the conversion between different interfaces. Simplex adapters connect single fibers, duplex adapters connect two fibers and multiplex adapters can connect up to four fibers. The coupling of these cables occurs in the alignment sleeves, which support the connectors. Once you've established the connection, pulses can travel through the cables without interruption or signal loss.

Benefits and Uses of Fiber Couplers

Fiber couplers are used with optical fiber distribution frames for superior and reliable performance. Since the cables are precisely aligned, there is minimal to no signal loss. You can use optic adapters in virtually any application since couplers exist for every type of fiber optic connection available.

Applications for fiber optic couplers include:

  • Internet and local area networks (LANs).
  • Telecommunications, like community antenna TV (CATV).
  • Industrial networking.
  • Public utility networks.

How to Choose a Fiber Optic Adapter

Technicians must first decide what types of cable they are connecting. Then, they can determine which fiber optic cable adapter they need by considering:

  • Fiber cable type: A fiber optic coupler with a square, rectangular or circular interface is best for connecting the same fiber cable type and connector. A hybrid fiber adapter is necessary when connecting two types of cable.
  • Fiber adapter sleeve material: Ceramic is a material used for alignment bushing in fiber optic adapters. Ceramic is not malleable, so the fiber adapter will align quickly for a precise connection. Metal is another option for the adapter sleeve.
